Nathaniel is still making progress. It's not dramatic, but we celebrate every little bit.
He is getting dog therapy now, which they say he seems to enjoy. He pets the dog and gives him treats. He sits still when the dog licks him. I hope he continues to work with the adorable, calm, friendly dog. I don't stay in the room during therapy because I disturb the dog when I pet her.
They have a button/switch that they use to try to help him communicate. We are trying to teach him to push the "Yes" button so that he can start to communicate. He sometimes answers correctly, and sometimes just likes to push the button. Sometimes he just ignores it completely.
The hole left from taking out the cannula (tracheostomy) still hasn't closed. We'll give it another month and then consider what to do. The surgery to close it is not simple. It's not just putting a small stitch over the hole and that's it. I hope it will close soon so he can perhaps start hydrotherapy.
He had started taking Ritalin to try to wake him up. The medicine seems to be helping. Now we have to try to find a good dose and good time to give it. If the dose it too high, it is hard to control his movements and he is not focused; however, if the dose is too low, he can't focus much at all. If we give it too early, he doesn't focus during some of his therapies. I think we just have to pick a dose and time to administer it and stay with it for a while until he gets used to it, or at least until we see how it goes.
Last week we went to Jerusalem to meet the doctors. He rode in the ambulance in his wheelchair and stayed in the chair the entire time. This is an improvement from the last time we went to Jerusalem when he traveled in an ICU ambulance on a stretcher. The doctors were amazed by his progress. We will go again at the end of September to plan the cranioplasty surgery, which at this point is planned for December, after Adina's wedding.
We had a joint meeting with the staff from the hospital and with the Ministry of Defense about what will happen to Nathaniel when he leaves the rehabilitation center. We want him to live as independently as possible. That means we need to find an apartment or house that can accommodate him, his caretakers, his therapy needs, and much more. Our apartment is not handicapped accessible, so we need to start looking around Ra'anana for potential options. We have a while because we won't leave rehab until after he recovers from the cranioplasty. That will be months. Still, renovating a place to meet his needs will take time. To prepare for the eventual move, both for him and for us, we are going to try to take him out for a few hours at least one evening a week. We think we may take him one week to visit his yeshiva and the next to go home. We are still in the planning stages.

החור שנותר מהוצאת הקנולה (טרכאוסטומיה) עדיין לא נסגר. ניתן לזה עוד חודש ואז נשקול מה לעשות. הניתוח לסגירתו אינו פשוט. זה לא רק לשים תפר קטן מעל החור וזהו. אני מקווה שזה ייסגר בקרוב כדי שהוא יוכל אולי להתחיל בהידרותרפיה.

בשבוע שעבר נסענו לירושלים לפגוש את הרופאים. הוא נסע באמבולנס בכסא הגלגלים שלו ונשאר בכיסא כל הדרך. זה שיפור מהפעם האחרונה בה נסענו לירושלים כשהוא נסע באמבולנס של טיפול נמרץ על אלונקה. הרופאים נדהמו מההתקדמות שלו. אנו ניסע שוב בסוף ספטמבר לתכנן את הניתוח לגולגולת, שבנקודה זו מתוכנן לדצמבר, לאחר חתונתה של עדינה.
קיימנו פגישה משותפת עם הצוות מבית החולים ועם משרד הביטחון לגבי מה שיקרה עם נתנאל כשיצא ממרכז השיקום. אנו רוצים שהוא יהיה כמה שיותר עצמאי. זה אומר שאנחנו צריכים למצוא דירה או בית שיכולים להכיל אותו, את המטפלים שלו, את צרכי הטיפול שלו ועוד. הדירה שלנו אינה נגישה לנכים, ולכן עלינו להתחיל לחפש ברעננה אחר אפשרויות נוספות.
