This week has had its ups and downs. On Friday, Nathaniel came down with a fever and pneumonia. Antibiotics work miracles and now he seems fine. He needed IV antibiotics because the "oral" doses, which are given through his PEG, weren't strong enough and didn't word fast enough. Poor guy, he's had so many IVs and other blood work that it's hard to find a good vein. He had to get poked three times to get the IV in the first time. He then pulled it out a few days later and had to go through the ordeal again. He's better now. He'll have a follow-up chest X-ray just to confirm all is well. When they did the initial X-ray on Friday, they found some fluid around the heart. They didn't think it was problematic, but they did an echocardiogram just to be sure. The results came back that everything is fine.
Nathaniel is more and more active. Yesterday he had a joint occupational therapy/physical therapy session. He gave the ball to the correct therapist when asked. So, if they said, "Give the ball to Carmel," he turned his head toward Carmel and gave it to her. If they said, "Give the ball to Tsuf," he turned his head toward Tsuf and gave it to her. After that session, we played more, and he was still able to give the ball/object to the correct person (Imma, caretaker, friend). He also waited (count to 5) to give the ball, and could "throw" it when asked. He closes his eyes on command and is working on learning how to push the "YES" button. He doesn't answer yes/no questions yet, but we are working on it. He also rolled from his side to his back and from his back to his side. The therapist gave hints like rubbing his back to show we wanted him to go to his back or touching his side to show which side to go to.
He likes to explore the hands of people. He especially feels for wedding/engagement rings so he can take them off. He is less talented with putting them back on, but we are working on that as well.
A friend is a music therapist and she comes to work with Nathaniel. He seemed to be watching the video, not just following where we moved the phone screen but actually moving his eyes like he was reading. He's not using his sense of sight as much as we would like. Next week he is supposed to get an eye check to determine what he can see and how his eyes work.
The hole in his neck where the cannula used to be still hasn't closed. I hope and pray that it closes soon so that he won't have to go through surgery to fix it. He is starting to get supplemental protein powder that is given to people who have non-healing wounds. Maybe that will work. It worked for him when he was first in the ICU and didn't have enough skin to close the initial scalp wound, so we'll see.

השבוע היו עליות ומורדות. ביום שישי היה לנתנאל חום ודלקת ריאות. האנטיביוטיקה עשתה ניסים ועכשיו הוא נראה בסדר. הוא היה זקוק לאנטיביוטיקה בגלל שהמינונים "דרך הפה" לא היו מספיק חזקים ולא פעלו מספיק מהר. היה קשה למצוא לו וריד טוב. נאלצו לדקור אותו שלוש פעמים כדי להשיג את ה- IV בפעם הראשונה. לאחר מכן הוא שלף את זה כמה ימים אחר כך ונאלץ לעבור שוב את התהליך. עכשיו הוא טוב יותר. עשו לו רנטגן לחזה רק כדי לאשר שהכל בסדר. כשעשו את הרנטגן הראשוני ביום שישי, הם מצאו נוזלים מסביב ללב. הם לא חשבו שזה בעייתי, אבל הם עשו אקו לב רק כדי להיות בטוחים. התוצאות חזרו שהכל בסדר.
נתנאל פעיל יותר ויותר. אתמול היה לו מפגש בריפוי בעיסוק/פיזיותרפיה. הוא נתן את הכדור למטפל הנכון כשנשאל. כך שאם אמרו "תן את הכדור לכרמל", הוא סובב את ראשו לכיוון כרמל ונתן לה. אם אמרו "תן את הכדור לצוף", הוא פנה את ראשו לעבר צוף ונתן לה. אחרי אותו סשן שיחקנו יותר, והוא עדיין הצליח לתת את הכדור/החפץ לאדם הנכון (אימא, מטפלת, חבר). הוא גם חיכה (לספור עד 5) כדי לתת את הכדור, ויכול "לזרוק" אותו כשנשאל. הוא עוצם את עיניו על הפקודה ופועל ללמוד ללחוץ על כפתור "כן". הוא עדיין לא עונה על שאלות כן/לא, אבל אנחנו עובדים על זה. הוא גם התגלגל לבד מהצד לגבו ומגבו לצד. המטפל נתן רמזים כמו לשפשף את הגב כדי להראות שאנחנו רוצים שהוא ילך לגבו או ייגע בצד שלו כדי להראות לאיזה צד ללכת.
הוא אוהב לחקור את ידיהם של אנשים. הוא מחפש במיוחד טבעות נישואין/אירוסין כדי שיוכל להוריד אותן. הוא פחות מוכשר בהעלאתם מחדש, אבל אנחנו עובדים על זה גם.
חברה משמשת כמטפלת במוזיקה והיא באה לעבוד עם נתנאל. נראה שהוא צופה בסרטון, לא רק בעקבות המקום בו הזזנו את מסך הטלפון, אלא ממש מזיז את עיניו כאילו הוא קורא. הוא לא משתמש בחוש הראיה שלו כמו שהיינו רוצים. בשבוע הבא הוא אמור לעבור בדיקת עיניים כדי לקבוע מה הוא יכול לראות ואיך עיניו עובדות.
החור בצווארו שהיה בעבר הקנולה עדיין לא נסגר. אני מקווה ומתפלל שזה ייסגר בקרוב כדי שלא יצטרך לעבור ניתוח כדי לתקן את זה. הוא מתחיל לקבל אבקת חלבון משלימה שניתנת לאנשים הסובלים מפצעים שאינם מרפאים. אולי זה יעבוד. זה עבד בשבילו כשהיה במחלקה לטיפול נמרץ ולא היה לו מספיק עור כדי לסגור את פצע הראש בקרקפת, אז נראה.
