We just celebrated the wedding of our daughter, Adina. Nathaniel was a big part of all of the celebrations. He came to the wedding, something that was unimaginable last December. He smiled for the photos and gave the thumbs up signal to show he was happy. Adina made a special blessing for his health under the chuppah. It was quite emotional. Nathaniel used his hand gestures to greet many friends and family. His friends made sure he was part of the festivities and dancing. They pushed him in his wheelchair during the dancing. He seemed to have a good time. He returned to the rehab hospital after a long and tiring evening.
Actually, the wedding celebrations started the week before the wedding with a henna ceremony, which Nathaniel attended. He even got the traditional Moroccan henna tattoo on his hand.
The last event of the wedding period was a Shabbat sheva brachot. Shabbat was the first night that Nathaniel spent outside of a hospital since the terror attack. We had to bring a carload of stuff for him, but in the end, it all worked out, even if I was really really nervous before and during the weekend. On Friday night, I asked him if he wanted to go to the synagogue. He gave me a thumbs up, so we went. I think he enjoyed it.
Now that we wedding is over, we returned to planning for Nathaniel's cranioplasty surgery. We went to Jerusalem to meet with the plastic surgeons who will be part of the cranioplasty surgery team. They said that he doesn't have enough skin to do the cranioplasty surgery so they need to implant an expander. It's another surgery before the "big" surgery. From what I understand, they surgically implant something like a deflated balloon under his scalp, and then add material to inflate it every week for 2 months so his skin will grow. I hope that the plastic surgeons at the hospital where the rehab center is can inject the stuff into the balloon to expand it because going to Jerusalem every week is really hard for Nathaniel. Only after there is enough skin can they even start to discuss the cranioplasty surgery. At this point I assume the cranioplasty won't be until April, and that's being very optimistic.
December 9 is the planned expander surgery. Please pray for success.
Aside from medical issues, Nathaniel has been making nice progress in other areas. He is starting to stick out his tongue when asked, which is new. It's a skill he needs for eating and talking. He has also been more consistent in answering questions by pointing to yes or no or by using hand gestures. We are working on consistency.
