It's after the Jewish holidays. Now that things are settling down we will have some consistency in therapies.
The wound that was surgically closed two weeks ago is healing nicely and the stitches were removed yesterday. As soon as it heals completely, we will be able to go ahead and plan for the major cranioplasty surgery. I am excited for it, but also nervous because so much could go wrong. The surgery will be at Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem and the rehab center is at Sheba hospital in Tel Hashomer (near Tel Aviv). If there is an emergency, we'll have to take a one-hour ambulance ride, unless doctors who don't know him and won't have experience with him can effectively treat him. Ugh. The infection rate is pretty high for cranioplasty (7–14%), and with Nathaniel's issues, he'll be on the high end. That said, most patients make big improvements after cranioplasty, so the risk is probably worth it.
A few of Nathaniel's closest friends came to visit last week. As soon as they started to sing, he had a big smile on his face. He just smiled the entire time they were there. It's exciting to see him show some emotion.
The physical therapists are starting to have him sit in a "regular" wheelchair, the kind with big wheels that folds in half. This is different from the wheelchair he now has, which has a high back and headrest and supports his body completely. It doesn't fold and is quite heavy. In the regular wheelchair his muscles have to work harder to support his body. It's good that he is getting stronger.
It's after the holidays and we have to start looking for options of places for him to live after rehab. It's not easy, and we don't know what is out there, but we have lots of help from friends and experts, so we'll manage.
הגענו לאחרי החגים, עתה, כשהדברים מתיישבים, יש לנו סדר מסוים בטיפולים.
הפצע שנסגר כירורגית לפני כשבועיים נרפא יפה והתפרים הוסרו אתמול. ברגע שהפצע יחלים לחלוטין, נוכל להמשיך ולתכנן את הניתוח העיקרי של Cranioplasty . אני מתרגשת בגלל זה, אבל גם עצבנית מכיוון שהרבה דברים יכולים להשתבש. הניתוח יתקיים בבית החולים הדסה בירושלים ומרכז השיקום נמצא בבית החולים שיבא בתל השומר (ליד תל אביב). כשקיים מצב חירום, נצטרך לנסוע באמבולנס במשך כשעה, אלא אם כן רופאים שאינם מכירים אותו ואין להם ניסיון אם נתנאל, יוכלו לטפל בו ביעילות. שיעור הזיהומים הוא די גבוה עבור ניתוחי Cranioplasty .(7–14%)עם זאת, למרבית המטופלים קיים שיפור גדול לאחר ניתוחCranioplasty , כך שהסיכון כנראה שווה את זה.
כמה מחבריו הקרובים של נתנאל הגיעו לבקר בשבוע שעבר. ברגע שהתחילו לשיר, היה לו חיוך גדול על פניו. הוא פשוט חייך כל הזמן שהם היו שם. מרגש לראות אותו מראה קצת רגש.
הפיזיותרפיסטים מתחילים לגרום לו לשבת בכיסא גלגלים "רגיל", מהסוג עם גלגלים גדולים שמתקפלים לשניים. זה שונה מכיסא הגלגלים שיש לו עכשיו, שיש לו גב גבוה ומשענת ראש ותומך בגופו לחלוטין. זה לא מתקפל והוא די כבד. בכיסא הגלגלים הרגיל השרירים שלו צריכים לעבוד קשה יותר כדי לתמוך בגופו. טוב שהוא מתחזק.
אנו לאחר החגים וצריכים לחפש אפשרויות של מקומות מגורים לאחר השיקום. זה לא קל ואנחנו לא יודעים מה יש שם, אבל יש לנו המון עזרה מחברים ומומחים, אז נסתדר.
