Neurorehabilitation is slow. It's often two steps forward and one step backward. We're now in a two step forward stage.
He has a new therapy. It is on this special machine. They call it the "robot". It simulates walking on a treadmill. It takes about 40 minutes to strap him in. He is put in a harness like a parachute jumpsuit. Then his legs and feet are strapped into different parts that can move his body. He is lowered onto the treadmill and everything is turned on. So, the treadmill starts moving and the robot helps to move his legs in a proper walking stride. It is similar to the stationary bike that he has been using. The bike just moves his legs, but he can also move them.
He now using the new wheelchair all of the time. In fact, he's learning how to move it himself. He is quite successful with his left arm. He right arm doesn't really work yet. From his work with the walking robot, he has the movement in his leg, so he sometimes also moves his leg to help move the chair. He doesn't put enough pressure on the ground yet to be effective, but at least he has the movement.
We are getting Nathaniel ready for all of the wedding events. In fact, in a few weeks, he will come to Raanana for Shabbat. It will be his first time not sleeping in a hospital in almost one year. I am very nervous about it, but I'm sure we'll all be okay.
He is learning to count on his fingers. For example ask him to show us three, and he holds up three fingers. We also ask him to show us how many letters are in different words and he holds up that many fingers. He is not 100% accurate, but it is encouraging.
We're still working on "Yes" and "No". He has hand signals and also signs on his chair table. We can't rely on what he answers, but he is getting the concept of being asked a question and being expected to provide an answer. I think he is also sometimes trying to tell us something, but we have no idea. We've heard him vocalize, which is encouraging because if he can make noises, maybe he will have other ways to communicate.
Nathaniel is smiling more often. I think he is recognizing more people and having more thoughts.
Last week was a very emotional week. It was 11 months (in the Hebrew calendar) since the terror attack. We attended a ceremony at the cemetery for Yovel Moryosef, one of the soldiers who was killed in the attack. I can't believe how much has changed since that day. Many people from the army were there and the two civilians who were at the bus stop the soldiers were guarding also came. Life goes on, but this year has been difficult.

נתנאל מחייך לעתים קרובות יותר. אני חושב שהוא מזהה יותר אנשים וחושב יותר מחשבות.
